HoRNDIS is implemented as a kext, rather than as a user-space program that opens a TAP or TUN device; this means that it does not conflict with other TAP/TUN kexts that you might have installed (like OpenVPN, Tunnelblick, or Cisco VPN). The driver implements Microsoft's proprietary RNDIS protocol, which is the only protocol supported natively by Android devices; although Linux and Windows users have enjoyed native RNDIS drivers for years, Mac OS X supports only CDC Ethernet devices out of the box.1)
On the shoulders of giants, I stand. My vague thanks to Apple for having at least some IOKit sample code available (even though the last time it successfully built was 10.2.x); it was a decent start reading to understand how I might want to structure this. Substantial thanks to David Brownell, who wrote the rndis_host driver for Linux; some portions of HoRNDIS were ported over from that work. David Brownell also wrote the f_rndis driver that allows Android/Linux devices to behave like RNDIS devices; reading that source helped to understand why HoRNDIS wasn't working in the early stages. (Sadly, David Brownell passed away in April of 2011. Thanks for all of your hard work, David; may you rest in peace.)
(These instructions were written specifically for the MOTO G and the link to the included driver is for the MOTO G; however, the basic instructions should work for creating a driver for a different Android device)
Got a new MOTO G phone a few weeks ago. Started playing around with allowing my laptop to use the cell phone as a wireless connection. When I tried to turn on USB Tethering, my XP laptop needed a driver for an RDNIS device.
Plug your phone into your computer, enable tethering, and you should get the Found New Hardware window. Go to the device manager and in Other Devices you will see the RNDIS driver with a question mark before it.

Once you have downloaded your new driver, you'll need to install it. In Windows, use a built-in utility called Device Manager, which allows you to see all of the devices recognized by your system, and the drivers associated with them.
If the battery is being charged, and in the pc, it is identified as Moto G5, it means the cable and usb driver are both OK. You need to unlock the phone, then in notification panel, you should see the notification: USB charging this device. You can tapit to see the option. By default, it is charging only. You need to set it to transfer files.

I've got a Dell Dimension E520 desktop, running Windows XP SP3. My phone is a Moto G4 running Android 7.0. I've had some difficulties with outdated documentation because my phone's software has been updated repeatedly since I got it 1 years ago, but I've found the switch to change from USB charging to USB data (Settings app, More, Tethering & portable hotspot, USB tethering). Switching this to "tethered" on the phone activates the Windows New Hardware Wizard to install software for RNDIS. The wizard fails to find anything at Microsoft. I've done searches for RNDIS for Windows XP. There are a bunch of driver sites, but they contain just download links and negligible information about the software. I've tried the following:
Because of this, you may see it after Windows tries to install the driver for a new device. Sometimes, it might prevent CD drives, Bluetooth hardware, or storage devices from showing up in This PC.
When you find the device that appears with an error, try unplugging that device, waiting a few minutes, then plugging it back in. If this has no effect, you should move onto updating or removing the driver for that device.
If that doesn't do anything (which will often be the case), search for your device's name online to see if there's a newer driver available from the manufacturer. Follow our guide to updating old Windows drivers for more help. In case the latest driver doesn't work (perhaps the manufacturer rolled out a buggy update), you can try installing an older version. This isn't a good long-term solution, but it's worth attempting.
In case updating the device driver doesn't work, you should next try replacing or removing the driver. Right-click on the problematic device and choose Properties, followed by the Driver tab, for some options.
If you can't do this, you'll need to select Uninstall Device to completely remove it from your system. After doing so, reboot. Windows should install generic drivers for some devices, like mice and keyboards, upon restarting. However, you'll likely have to reinstall any manufacturer-specific drivers, like those for gaming mice, manually. 2ff7e9595c
